The short answer is “it depends.” We will take the next few Sundays to address the complexity of this topic. Sin is separated into two categories: mortal sin, which turns a person away from God and venial sin, which damages but does not destroy a person’s relationship with God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be met: it must concern a serious matter, it must be committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent. Anything against the ten commandments qualifies as a serious matter. Unintentional ignorance, coercion, illness, or uncontrollable circumstances may all diminish a person’s knowledge or consent.
